justice reinvestment

STOP the MASS INCARCERATION

of First Nations people

Due to discriminatory laws and policies, trauma and poverty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are facing a crisis of mass incarceration.

We believe we can change this through a NATIONAL JUSTICE REINVESTMENT BODY

We're calling on the Government to:

1.

Divert funds away from the

extremely costly, and ineffective,

criminal justice system

2.

Start investing in the community-led

and evidence-based solutions that

address the root causes of offending

What is Justice Reinvestment?

Justice reinvestment is a tried and tested model that recognises every dollar put towards building or maintaining prisons, is a dollar that could be spent investing in our communities to prevent offending, provide housing, employment, health care and education.

How does Justice Reinvestment work?

Justice reinvestment calculates savings as a result of reducing contact with the justice system and avoiding prison expansions by investing in front-end, long term community development instead. These savings are reinvested into communities to support them to thrive.

Why is a National Justice Reinvestment Body important?

For several years First Nations justice advocates and experts have called for the creation of an independent National Justice Reinvestment Body. There is considerable evidence, in Australia and internationally, that attests to the importance of place-based, community-driven solutions to ‘criminal justice’ issues.

What would a National Justice Reinvestment Body do?

1. Advocate for, coordinate and support community-led justice reinvestment initiatives across Australia

2. Conduct research and data analysis of trial programs, and provide accessible data for local justice reinvestment initiatives to utilise

3. Facilitate data collection and meaningful engagement and access to data by community- controlled organisations as well as governments and other key stakeholders

4. Provide technical expertise and best practice advice to justice reinvestment trial site programs and initiatives

5.Maintain a publicly accessible database of evidence-based justice reinvestment strategies

6. Provide advice, expertise and guidance on legislative and policy reform to Commonwealth, state and territory governments, including on mechanisms for shifting resources away from prisons and corrections, and into communities
